For kids, childhood is the most important phase of their life and it is at this phase brain is trained and nurtured to face the future challenges and live a successful and happy tomorrow. Similarly, for the parents as well, parenting is the most memorable phase of their life. It is their parenting method that determines the child’s health and intelligence. Every parent wants to cherish memories of their parenting and it is said that you can lose everything but what remains forever are the memories. To create a strong bond between parents and child, researchers have identified the four types of parenting methods or styles :
- Authoritarian
- Authoritative
- Permissive
- Uninvolved
Authoritarian Parenting
Authoritarian Parenting is based more on blind obedience, punishment and stern discipline. In this method, parents dominate their child. Parents are involved in every aspect of child’s thinking and action. Children who grow up with strict authoritarian parents tend to have an unhappy disposition. They are at a higher risk of developing self-esteem problems because their opinions aren’t valued. In many cases, children become hostile and aggressive.
Authoritative Parenting
This is said to be a better method of parenting. In Authoritative Parenting, parents put best of their efforts in understanding their children and also invest time for their mental and physical growth. Researchers have found kids who have authoritative parents are most likely to become responsible adults who feel comfortable expressing their opinions. Children raised with authoritative parenting are more disciplined and tend to be happy and successful. They also grow up to become smart decision makers.
Permissive Parenting
Permissive parents are lenient also their interference is limited in their child’s day to day activity. Permissive parents believe in self-learning, they let their child learn things in his/her own way. Kids who grow up with permissive parents tend to possess egocentric tendencies. They may exhibit more behavioral problems as they don’t appreciate authority and rules. As the kids are given complete freedom, they are likely to pick trends without understanding its benefits and hazards.
Uninvolved Parenting
Uninvolved parents expect children to raise themselves. They don’t devote much time or energy into meeting children’s basic needs. Most of the times, uninvolved parents lack knowledge about child development. Sometimes, they’re simply overwhelmed with other problems, like work, paying bills, and managing a household. Children with uninvolved parents are likely to encounter more delinquency and addictions problems.
The above parenting methods are created by the experts to identify the parenting and child issues.
The above methods may not be applicable to every child as every child has his/her own psychology. Hence the parenting method should change as per the child and their individual needs. For example: If you have two kids then it is possible that one may learn from Permissive Parenting and the other through Authoritative Parenting. It is advisable for parents to understand their child and act accordingly. To make your parenting a smooth process it is always advisable to take child expert’s help. Wish you happy parenting!
